Maketu Poultry Farms is a family-owned, independent pullet rearing operation based in Mangatangi, South Auckland. We specialise in one thing, rearing healthy, well-grown point-of-lay pullets, and doing it to a standard our clients can depend on.
We rear birds for aviary, free-range and colony systems under contract for layer farms throughout the North Island, running multiple batches through the year. Every flock is reared under a vet-supervised health programme and strict biosecurity, so the birds that leave our farm arrive ready to perform.

Certified chicks arrive straight from the hatchery, pre-vaccinated and into a cleaned, pre-warmed shed the same day.

Biosecurity and bird welfare sit at the centre of everything we do. Our protocols protect every flock from disease, and our welfare standards reflect a simple belief: healthy, well-cared-for birds are better birds.
Every visitor checks in on arrival, steps through a foot bath and sanitises before entry. All vehicles pass through an automatic arch wash at the gate, and no one enters a shed who has been in contact with other poultry in the previous 48 hours.
Strictly no outside footwear in any shed. Designated boots and clean overalls only, with foot baths and sanitiser at every entry. Staff scrub in and out, and every shed is stripped, washed and fumigated between flocks.
We invested in a full upgrade: an automatic vehicle arch sprayer, a separate delivery-truck lane with a crate wash bay, a dedicated biosecure arrival facility, and an on-site workshop, keeping farm vehicles and people within the secure zone.
Every bird in our care is reared to the New Zealand Layer Hens Code of Welfare and audited against industry standards. From feed and water to climate and handling, the details are managed to give each flock the best possible start.
Range access is provided from six weeks where conditions allow. In line with current biosecurity guidance during the avian influenza (H5N1) situation, birds may be temporarily housed indoors for their protection.
